“What has changed in 10 years?” allows us to understand many aspects of how society in Turkey has changed over the past 10 years.

“What has changed in 10 years?” compares the findings of two surveys we conducted in 2008 and 2018, in which we interviewed over 5,000 people face-to-face each time.

You will have the opportunity to examine how and in which directions society has or has not changed on many different aspects such as settlement, education, lifestyle, views on women, internet use, daily life practices, and working status. You will come across many findings that will challenge your prejudices or surprise you;

• Society has become more educated; but still one-third of mothers are illiterate.
• More of us live in apartment buildings; however, the percentage of tenants also increased.
• The percentage of farmers has reached the point of extinction, while the small retailers have increased.
• We’re getting married later. Young people have become more likely to marry consensually; yet, the majority of marriages are still arranged.
• No major change in religiosity or cover. However, the non-believers have become a little more visible.
• There is progress in views on women’s freedom. But the majority still says “women should seek permission from their spouse to work.”
• The Internet is now used much more commonly for banking, but its use for food shopping has not increased.
• Newspaper readers have decreased from two thirds to one third, as social media users have doubled.

We believe that one obvious way of truly understanding society and grasping how it will evolve in the future is to examine how it has changed in the past. In this context, we hope that our “What has changed in 10 years?” feature will be useful.
